This last weekend, i loaded my college Daughter into the car and we drove NORTH NORTH NORTH. She came along for the vacation aspect (bonus for me!), and I took a Glass Fusing class at one of my all-time most beloved places, the Grand Marais Art Colony. I have only attended classes there twice in my life now, but i am already daydreaming of future trips. The Art Colony is fulfilling and encouraging and nurturing in a way i can barely describe. I feel a part of something when I am there. A community of 'artists', not crafters... a creativity melting pot. The history there is rich, the levels and layers of talent are infinite.

I often wonder to myself if i over-romanticize this artistic haven of a place. Are the people who are able to attend it on a regular basis, or the people who live down the street, truly appreciative of what a gem they have at their disposal? I can't imagine they don't absolutely cherish it. The setting of Grand Marais along the shores of Lake Superior ALONE are enough to endear it to me, i adore the north shore and feel inspired & connected to it like no other place i have ever been. But the love i have for the north shore of Lake Superior in no way detracts from the pure & simple fact that the Art Colony is SPECIAL in & of itself. I think part of the explanation for my draw to it is connected to my need to feel like a real and true 'ARTIST'. This need is nurtured by just being there.

I literally dream of classes and studio time there, and although basic geography , time , and funds do not allow it, some dreams are meant to simmer and stew, so we have something to look forward to and to day-dream about. I WILL be back there... never soon enough.

LAPDESK LADY

ok... so first i got one of these LAPDESK LADY LAPDESKS for Kenzie when she was heading off to college, she loves it, uses it every day. She loved it so much that i had to splurge and get the jumbo one for myself. I LOVE IT!! Hours of photo editing have now become more of a lounging experience than a sitting at the desk type thing. It is a super comfy cloud on your lap with a flat surface perfect for your laptop or writing, or a book and some snacks...whatever it is you usually do on your lap where you wish you had a flat surface. The quality and the cuteness and the usefulness make it a great Christmas gift idea. Or get one for yourself, just cuz you should :) Visit Donna's shop HERE ... Sharing: i was recently in the local gas station at the lake, buying some ingredients for a smores campfire, when 2 men my age behind me, took it upon themselves to say loudly, how the fat ass bitch in front of them in line should reconsider her purchases. Their laughter and jeers at my expense continued the whole entire time that i was in line in front of them, and they were purposely being loud enough so i could hear them. I froze in mortification, my face felt like it was melting off... not because i am in denial or because i was suddenly struck with the realization that i was fat or unattractive, i own a mirror ... but by the pure unkindness & mean spirits of some human beings. When i left the store & got in my car i drove as fast as i could away from there because i knew they would be emerging shortly after me, and because i knew i was going to cry... hard.

I was right, WOW did i cry. I hate that i cried. Not because i hate my fat self... because i really DON'T! I don't cry about my weight or hate skinny people. I am me! More than a couple people love me for me. These morons don't know me! I was mad at myself for not having a snappy come back or a humorous sarcasm to toss back at them like i would usually have in my day to day life. I usually toss out the self deprecating jokes to inform others that i am aware of my own obvious struggles. Much like a bald guy makes fun of his own head, or the shortest person (also me) makes short jokes. I am usually not one to be speechless. I was mad at myself for not saying SOMETHING or standing up to them. But i was, at least, glad i didn't cry in front of them. Somehow i think that's what the assholes were hoping for... to make me cry? I dont know!!

Also, i am not saying this to be any degree of high & mighty, but i prayed for them. I really did. And for some reason i felt the need to pray for their Mothers... because i felt sad for them! what miserable adults their sons became. I also thought, wow... these dummies probably have kids, those poor doomed children. I hope & pray their kids have a fat or non-fat Momma or grandma that will instill in them some kindness.

sometimes the pressure of taking pictures for other people is more than i bargained for & i sometimes want to say no. sometimes i want to stop worrying about my 'toy' equipment, and the $ aspect. Sometimes i long to quit doing it for hire and go back to 'just for fun'. sometimes (lots) i think i am not good enough to be doing this.

but then... just sometimes . . . i might come upon a a moment like this ....

during the session, he was silly & i beleive a little choked up. he was adorable, and excited to be asked to pose with his little Lauren. after the session... her and I cried.

well i haven't had much time for anything but beer signs and photo sessions. Staining the deck at the lake, and general busy busy harvest time on the farm, has left me little time to do much "art" these days. I have never had this many photo jobs and i am kind of amazed and thrilled! I'm flattered too, people wanna pay ME to take photos? blows my mind :) On that note, i am contemplating a price increase. I have kept my price uber low to build clients, but the amount of time i spend is silly. I probably get paid $1/hour :) Still want to keep it more reasonable than a traditional photographer tho, and pricing is the biggest stress of photography for me. I would do it for free, but i just can't... i think my time is worth a little sumthin sumthin :) And since people are willing to pay me... maybe my talents are worth a little sumthin too?? Why is that so hard to say out loud (or type??) ha!

Today... the very day that my dear sweet Grandmother flew to heaven (and only days from when we lost Kenny's dad), is now the day we sign the papers on our farm. PAID IN FULL! I am so proud of my husband, i could cry. Oh, well whatta ya know, there goes the tears now.

Hard work, responsibility, and love of the land under his feet... pays off. It's always been "home", but we can call it 'ours', in every way today. We are the 3rd generation to live in the house, his grandparents built it, he grew up in it, his daughter had his childhood bedroom to call her own... and we will grow old there. I dreamed of these kind of roots as a child, and here i am. Here we are, providing those roots for our daughter.

I am blessed beyond words. All praise and glory be to God. And thank you dear Lord for this husband of mine, for our home, and for bringing me to this place of contentment and joy in my life.

Minnesota Vikings Training Camp is in Mankato, MN every year, and Miller Lite is the official beer sponsor of the Vikes... so when they decided to end the lock-out (or whatever the hell was their hold up) and decide to hold camp after all... my salesmen scrambled last minute to bathe the town in purple & blue sponsorship sparkles. UGH!! Well that means more sign orders than i can possibly count... and thus the reason i have had the week from HELL here at work. Thanks Vikings... now please win at least a game or 2 wouldja? honeysuckle i planted for the hummingbirds at the lake. I almost gave up on this, as it was not doing well for about 2 summers. Now year 3 and it's amazing. have you ever googled yourself? teehee, sounds dirty. But being serious, i google all the time. I use Google image search almost every day at work. Often we need images and brand logos that are not readily available, so we nab things off the web all the time. Right or wrong. And as much as i loathe clipart, we do what the client wants, and need to use it sometimes. I like that Google Images Search can refine your search by name, size, type (photo, clipart, etc), and even color.

For those that don't know, I have worked at Locher Brother's for approximately 16 years now! This logo is the 2nd or 3rd updated version I have done.
